Our recent Beijing Breakfast Food Tour took us to Bao Yuan Dumpling House, located on 6 Maizidian Lu, near the Lufthansa Center in Liangmaqiao. I read about BYDH on one of my favorite foodie web sites, Savour Asia (<--check it out!) as one of the recommended dumpling houses in the Jing. It's known to have over 190 varieties of dumplings - I was ready to enter dumpling heaven!

When we stepped in, the place was packed! It was very clean inside, with bright tiles and colored pictures hanging on the wall. Most of the patrons were locals, which made me feel good about picking this place.
We ordered two starters - stir fried vegetables with almonds and cold rice noodles soaked in hot chili oil and vinegar. The noodles were delish! The flavors were powerful and strong, and the dish had those tongue numbing Sichuan peppercorns that I love.

After the starters, we were ready for some dumplings! We ordered 3 different types - the classic pork with leeks, smoked ham with tofu and chives, and mustard green pepper and dried shrimp. The kitchen dyed the dumpling skins with vegetable juices - for 1 rmb extra you can order the dumplings in different colors!

Here's a cross-section of the vegetable dumpling. All three were yummy! I really liked the dumpling skin - they were thin and chewy, and you can taste the freshness of the dough. My favorite one was the smoked ham with tofu and chives - our waitress recommended this one and I thought the flavors played out the best.
18 dumplings total
1 vegetable side dish
1 rice noodle side dish
1 can of lulu
1 can of diet coke
Total damage? 53 RMB ($8 USD)! Woohoo!
